Star Wars Battlefront II has risen 142 places in the UK physical charts this week to reach No.5.
The shooter shot up thanks to a bulk sale of the PC version of the game.
Otherwise, it's a very typical Top 10 this week. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is still No.1, albeit just about. Activision's game is just under 400 copies ahead of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which sits at No.2. FIFA 20 is narrowly behind that by just under 1,000 units at No.3. Meanwhile, GTA V makes its inevitable return to the Top Five at No.4 (the game was No.7 last week).
Last week's new release, Dr Kawashima's Brain Training for Nintendo Switch, suffered a minor 22% drop in sales week-on-week. However, because of a far weaker boxed market this week, the game has risen from No.15 to No.9.

Shocking no one who has paid any attention to any of the charts stories published on this site since 2013, Grand Theft Auto V was the best-selling game of the decade in the US by dollar sales.
The NPD Group has provided GamesIndustry.biz with a listing of the top-selling games of the decade that saw GTA V comfortably at the top, having been reported as the most profitable entertainment product of all time in 2018 and, at last count in November, having sold 115 million copies worldwide.
In second place? Call of Duty. In third? Also Call of Duty. Call of Duty titles took a total of ten spots in the top 20 games of the decade, with Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty Black Ops II in second and third place, respectively. As of the franchise's 2015 full-year financials, Call of Duty had surpassed 250 million units across all its entries, and done over $15 billion in total sales life-to-date. Given that all four of its major releases since are also in the top 20, it's likely well beyond that by now.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was the best-selling game in the US by dollar sales for the month of December, and continued a multi-year franchise trend as the best selling game of the year.
In fact, a Call of Duty game has been the best-selling game of the year every year this decade except for 2013 (Grand Theft Auto V) and 2018 (Red Dead Redemption II), according to data shared by The NPD Group. It has also been the best-selling franchise for 11 consecutive years.
Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order took the No.2 spot for December, and ended the year at No.6 overall. It is also Respawn's best-selling game of all time by dollar sales.
In addition, MLB The Show 19 is now the best-selling baseball game in US history, though it didn't crack the top 20 this month.
Nintendo appears to have had an excellent holiday, with Luigi's Mansion 3 coming in at No.5 for the month and No.18 for the year, and a total of five titles in the top 10 and nine in the top 20 for the month. That's not including digital sales, which Nintendo does not report.
Overall in software, dollar sales were down 13% year-over-year in December to $1.1 billion and down 9% for the full-year to $6.6 billion. The Nintendo Switch was the only platform that grew in software.
Nintendo also, unsurprisingly, had a strong year in hardware. The Nintendo Switch was the best-selling platform in December and for the full-year (the PS4 took the crown for the full decade). Overall hardware spending for December was down 17% year-over-year to $973 million and full-year spending was down 22% to $3.9 billion -- the Switch was the only platform with gains.
Accessory and game card spending was down 14% for December to $869 million, while full-year sales dropped 7% to $4.1 billion. The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller was the best-selling accessory for the year.

UK mental health charity Safe in our World has announced that three industry veterans have joined its initiative as patrons: UKIE CEO Dr. Jo Twist, former IGDA head and current Take This board member and Global Game Jam leader Kate Edwards, and voice actor Doug Cockle.
Safe in our World was launched in October 2019 to raise awareness and offer support for those with mental health issues or concerns both within the games industry, and those who play games.
Its roster of patrons work actively to define the charity's output and garner support from within the industry.

A new plan by the Chinese government may result in further crackdown on games and live streams with content considered to be violent or pornographic.
Technode reports that the "Healthy China 2030" initiative is a coming push to improve Chinese mental health through various measures affecting schools, mental health organizations, counseling, and educational initiatives. It also includes plans for the reduction of violent and pornographic content that it believes is causing an increase in mental disorders among minors.
The initiative is being spearheaded by 12 different government departments, including the National Health Commission, the Publicity Department, and the National Radio and Television Administration. Together, these groups will set goals with the aim of improving the mental wellbeing of children and adolescents.

Three major games firms are contributing towards aid for Australia as bushfires continue to ravage the nation.
Local developer Ubisoft Australia has donated AUS$30,000 to the Australia Red Cross Disaster and Recovery Relief Fund, and is encouraging more direct donations from its audience.
"We've heard the calls requesting we create in-game items to encourage donations," the company wrote via Twitter. "However this takes considerable development time and we feel immediate action is required."
Meanwhile, Infinity Ward has renamed its Outback pack for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare to the Outback Relief pack and will be donating 100% of all the DLC's sales across all platforms until January 31st.
The tweet announcing this donation says this is just "part of our efforts to help provide relief toward the devastating bushfires in Australia," and that any previous sales of the Outback pack will also be donated.

A new GSD chart shows just how different the UK charts will look when download data is included.
The firm (which was set up by European trade body ISFE and operated by B2Boost) released its first official UK chart last week, counting date from boxed games retailers to reveal that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was No.1, just ahead of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and FIFA 20.
However, GSD also publishes a digital chart, which arrives later in the week. The digital chart counts data supplied directly from a selection of publishers (namely Activision Blizzard, Bandai Namco, Capcom, Codemasters, EA, Focus Home Interactive, Koch Media, Microsoft, Milestone, Paradox, Sega, Sony, Square Enix, Take-Two, Ubisoft and Warner Bros). It therefore doesn't cover the entire market. Indeed, notably Nintendo is missing entirely, so no Switch games are included in the digital chart.
The digital chart for the first week of the year has just arrived. And although it's not perfect, it does show us just how digital games are performing and how radically different the charts might look when download sales are factored in.
For instance, the digital chart below sees big sales for the likes of GTA V, Rainbow Six: Siege, Star Wars Battlefront II, Monopoly Plus and Spider-Man. And it would make quite a difference on the Top Ten.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare would still have been No.1 with digital sales included, but Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order would have fallen to No.4 behind GTA V at No.2 and FIFA 20 at No.3.
Borderlands 3 sold well physically, but it was a quiet week for the game as a download and it would not have made the Top Ten. Meanwhile, both Rainbow Six: Siege, Star Wars: Battlefront II, The Sims 4, Monopoly Plus and Spider-Man will all have been Top Ten games this week.

An online auction of rare gaming items and more is the latest industry effort to raise money towards helping fight against the Australian bushfires.
Organised by a small group of Australian developers, led by Defiant Development founder Morgan Jaffit, the initiative is called Game Devs For Firies and follows a similar format to the recent #AuthorsForFireys auction.
Starting tomorrow (Tuesday, January 14), games companies and professionals will be offering signed games, one-off experiences, services and more via the hashtags #gamedevsforfiries and #gamedevsforfireys.
The highest bidder for each item will be instructed on how to donate directly to an Australian state fire service, either of the seller's nomination or the bidder's choice. Once they proof the donation has been made, their prize will be dispatched.
Jaffit himself is offering a signed copy of the Hand of Fate, plus the board game version and "a one-hour tarot reading/real-life Hand of Fate RP experience."

FIFA 20 is enjoying its sixth consecutive week at No. 1 in the EMEAA combined charts, and tenth it's week in the top spot since launching in September 2019.
The ever-present Grand Theft Auto V appears in the latest charts at No. 2, up from No. 13 according to the previous week's charts.
However, a spokesperson from the data tracking firm B2Boost said this rare absence from the top ten resulted from incomplete data, and Rockstar's open world crime-a-thon should have placed at No. 3 for the final week of 2019, meaning it has climbed one spot week-to-week.
This batch of incomplete data has led to a number of inconsistencies with the story GamesIndustry.biz published on January 3, 2020. The below has been reported directly from chart data supplied by B2Boost for the first week of 2020.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is down one spot to No. 3, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order holds fast at No. 4.
Chart regular Rainbow Six Siege is in at No. 5, followed by Red Dead Redemption II.
Despite not providing digital sales data, Nintendo has two titles in the top ten, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at No. 7, and Luigi's Mansion at No. 9.
Spider-Man and Star Wars Battlefront II round out the charts at No. 8 and No. 10 respectively.
Pokémon Sword has finally gone the way of Pokémon Shield, falling from the top ten entirely this week to No. 12.

A Japanese prefecture is proposing an ordinance that would limit the time minors spend using smartphones, computers, and playing video games to one hour per day.
The Asahi Shimbun reports that Japan's Kagawa prefectural assembly is currently putting the ordinance together in response to what officials feel is a growing dependence on smartphones and games that is having a harmful effect on school and social activities for minors.
In its current form, the drafted ordinance asks parents or guardians to enforce a one-hour-per-day limit on screentime for those under age 18, with 90 minutes allowed on weekends and holidays. It also specifies that minors of junior high school age and younger have devices shut off by 9 p.m., while older children may use them until 10 p.m. It does not include a penalty for violations of the ordinance.

GameStop has lowered its full-year guidance once again after sales over the nine-week-long holiday period were "well below expectations."
The retailer reported holiday sales of $1.83 billion, down 27.5% year-over-year from 2018. In a press release, GameStop maintained that sales results were "indicative of overall industry trends impacting the video game industry" and were largely the result of decline in new hardware and software sales in December.

Supercell's Clash of Clans saw a year-over-year revenue increase in 2019 for the first time since 2015, thanks at least in part to the introduction of a "Gold Pass" reminiscent of Fortnite's "Battle Pass."
According to Sensor Tower, Clash of Clans brought in $727 million in total revenue for 2019, up 27% year-over-year from $527 million in 2018. Prior to that, yearly revenue had been on the decline since its last year-over-year increase in 2015, when Clash of Clans brought in $1.8 billion -- up 9% year-over-year from 2014's $1.6 billion.
Sensor Tower suggests this is due to the introduction of a $4.99 "Gold Pass" of content beginning in April, noting that spending that month went up 73% year-over-year, 58% month-over-month from March, and reached $66.6 million. In the first seven days after the Gold Pass release, spending shot up 145% and reached $3.9 million per day during that period.
Clash of Clans has been out since 2012, and in 2019 accounted for 42% of developer Supercell's total revenue. Total since its launch, it's brought in over $6.4 billion worldwide.

We're still in the holiday lull of no major new releases, which means FIFA 20 was still No.1 in the EMEAA charts for the fifth week running and the ninth total week since it launched.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order also made returns to the No.2 and No.3 spots, with Luigi's Mansion once more at No.5, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe still at No.6, and Pokemon Sword hanging on at No.8 (Shield dropped to No.20). So things are remaining relatively stable. But some end-of-year sales helped boost other titles into the top 10 that hadn't visited for a while.
Marvel's Spider-Man jumped from No.22 two weeks ago to No.13 last week, to No.7 this week thanks to a sale on the PS Store. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege and multiple EA titles (including Need for Speed: Heat, Star Wars Battlefront II, and The Sims 4 particularly) also benefitted from discounts and made jumps. Rainbow Six moved from No.24 to No.4, Need for Speed went from No.15 to No.9, Battlefront II rose from No.39 to No.11, and The Sims 4 went from No.33 to No.12.
No new releases broke into the top 50 combined, physical, or digital sales this week.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is the first UK physical No.1 of 2020.
The Activision shooter comes out ahead of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and FIFA 20, which swapped places this week with Star Wars now at No.2 and the football game at No.3.
It's a pretty similar Top Ten this week, despite a significant drop in sales across the board, which is typical for the start of the year. The biggest change is with Borderlands 3, which continues its rise back up the charts and is now at No.4. 2K's game has been reduced in price to Ł20 in the post-Christmas sales.
There is a single new release in the boxed retail charts -- Dr Kawashima's Brain Training for Nintendo Switch, which debuts at No.14. It may look like a poor start for the Nintendo game, but the last Brain Training (Devilish Brain Training on Nintendo 3DS) didn't make the charts in its first week at all. In fact, launch week sales of this new Brain Training is 15 times bigger than its predecessor.
Devilish Brain Training was severely delayed on 3DS in Europe, and didn't release until after the Switch was on sale (back in July 2017).
The Brain Training series targets more mainstream users who don't typically rush out to buy the latest releases. Therefore the game may well hang around in the charts for a while to come.

In the last three years, the number of adults age 50 and up who play video games regularly has increased, from 38% in 2016 to 44% in 2019.
An AARP survey of 3,737 people ages 50 and older identified 1,664 respondents as gamers -- meaning they owned a gaming device (phone, computer, tablet, console) and played a game on it at least once per month. 49% of women surveyed played games, compared to 40% of men.
Of those who didn't play games, 57% said it was because they were just "not a video game person." Only 5% said it was due to not understanding how the technology worked, and only 9% reported their lack of gaming as a view that games were for younger people.
Collectively, those who did play games averaged about five hours of play per week. 47% said they played daily, up from 40% in 2016, and four out of five played games at least once per week.
73% of the older adults who played games said they played on phones or other mobile devices, while 47% used computers or laptops. Only 13% played on consoles. The best-loved genre was puzzle and logic, with 49% reporting it as their favorite, with "card and tile" games (not gambling or casino games) as the favorite of 47%. Only 5% preferred action-adventure, and 5% preferred shooters.

Free-to-play mobile title Fate/Grand Order was the most talked about game on Twitter last year.
That's according to data directly from the platform holder, which offered insights into the definitive trends of 2019.
Last year there were more than 1.2 billion tweets about gaming, up nearly 20% year-over-year. Many of the most talked about games on Twitter reflect the status quo of popular live service games titles like Fortnite and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds.
The top ten breaks the Western-centric illusion of what's popular and what's not however, as constant bestsellers like Call of Duty, FIFA, Grand Theft Auto V are notably absent, in favour of the games more popular in Asia.

The games industry generated an impressive $120.1 billion with its digital content last year -- more than in any other year to date.
The figure comes from SuperData's newly-released 2019 Year In Review report, which reveals the games and interactive media industry grew by 4% when compared to 2018.
Within the digital games segment, mobile unsurprisingly generated the most revenue at $64.4 billion, followed by PC ($29.6 billion) and console ($15.4 billion).
The grand total is reached by factoring in the $6.5 billion generated by gaming video content across the likes of Twitch, YouTube, Mixer and Facebook, plus the $6.3 billion from XR, which encompasses augmented, mixed and virtual reality.
The more astute mathematicians out there will recognise that this adds up to $122.2 billion. SuperData notes that the total revenue is less than the sum of all segments since some earnings are included under multiple categories. For example, Pokémon Go revenue is counted under both mobile games and XR.
Free-to-play still leads the market, accounting for $4 out of every $5 generated. Mobile now represents 74% of all free-to-play revenue, thanks in part to the ongoing success of Tencent's Honor of Kings and the Candy Crush Saga games.
Focusing specifically on the digital games market (mobile, PC, console), free-to-play accounted for 80% of all digital games revenue last year.
Meanwhile, the premium games market saw revenues decline by 5% to $18.9 billion, largely due to a lack of major AAA game launches. Premium sales were stronger in 2018 thanks to the likes of Red Dead Redemption II, Marvel's Spider-Man and Monster Hunter: World.

As the end of the year approaches, we're beginning to run out of unique ways to write, "FIFA 20 is No.1 for the EMEAA region, and not much changed from last week to this week."
Five games retained their places from last week including FIFA 20, which is back at the top for the third week in a row and the seventh total week since its launch. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare also refused to budge from No. 2.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order appears to have had a boost from No.5 last week to No.3, possibly due to the release this week of the latest Star Wars film: The Rise of Skywalker.
No new releases made it into the Top 50 combined, digital, or physical charts for EMEAA last week, and everything in the top 10 was something that had been in the top 10 or relatively close to it in recent weeks. In fact, the most interesting thing going on this week appears to be a couple of Assassin's Creed titles -- Odyssey, Origins, and Black Flag, specifically -- getting a digital boost. Odyssey went from No.14 to No.9, Origins went from No.24 to No.10, and Black Flag went from No.18 to No.11, all thanks to a sales bundle.
Holiday sales might shake things up a bit more next week, but this looks to be the status quo for a bit until we see more major releases in the new year.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is 2019's official UK Christmas No.1.
The Activision shooter retains its No.1 position thanks to a 42% jump in sales week-on-week.
It holds off FIFA 20, which enjoyed a late festive surge where sales spiked 73% -- sending the football title from No.3 to No.2. FIFA and Call of Duty are the typical festival chart toppers, with FIFA being No.1 at Christmas eight times and Call of Duty just ahead with nine. Last year's Christmas No.1 was a break from the norm, with Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption 2 topping the chart.
Despite missing out on Christmas No.1, it was still a strong week for EA with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order at No.3. The game drops a place but still enjoyed a good final week before Christmas, with sales up 23% compared with the previous seven days.
In terms of year-on-year comparisons, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is tracking ahead of last year's Black Ops 4. In fact, Modern Warfare's pre-Christmas sales are slightly higher despite being on sale for nine weeks compared with Black Ops 4's 11.
FIFA 20 sales are well down compared with FIFA 19 (physical sales only). Yet impressively, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is tracking ahead of last year's big EA shooter -- Battlefield V. Sales are slightly behind 2017's Star Wars Battlefront II (again, digital sales are not included), but this was expected by EA due to the different nature of this year's game (Fallen Order is a single-player adventure, whereas Battlefront II was predominantly a multiplayer game).
Completing the Top Five are two Nintendo games in the form of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at No.4 (sales up 30%) and Luigi's Mansion 3 at No.5 (sales down 18%). With Pokémon Sword at No.6 (sales up 21%) and Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games at No.8 (also up 21%), Nintendo is responsible for the most games in the Christmas Top Ten (with four).

Grand Theft Auto V was the most downloaded game across Europe, Middle East, Africa and Australia in the build-up to Christmas.
The game, which is now in its sixth Christmas on the market, sold more digital copies than FIFA 20 in second place. This is according to the GSD charts from ISFE.
The digital chart is specifically for (typically) AAA games from the majority of big publishers (see below for details).
FIFA 20 was the most popular physical game across European countries (see below for list of countries) and, as a result, the football game was the overall combined No.1 title of Christmas in Europe. In the UK, the Christmas No.1 was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
With physical and digital combined, GTA V actually comes in at No.4 just ahead of Luigi's Mansion 3 on Switch (at No.5). However, Nintendo does not share its digital data with the charts, so it's not clear if the ghost hunting game would have charted higher. There are a number of other Switch games in the Christmas Top Ten, including Mario Kart 8: Deluxe (No.6), Pokémon Sword (No.8) and Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo Olympic Games (No.10). Just Dance 2020, which is a multi-format game but with the majority of sales on Switch, is at No.7. All of these games may have charted higher if Switch digital data was available.
In the combined chart, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare holds No.2 and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order retains No.3.
As is usual for the week before Christmas, there are no new releases in the charts, but some price activity around the Crash Bandicoot games (Crash Team Racing at No.13 and N.Sane Trilogy at No.16) sees both of those titles break into the Top 20, alongside Spider-Man on PS4 (which rises from No.14 to No.22).
